About this tool

Chord & Scale Lab shows and plays every diatonic chord in any key and scale, labelled with Roman numerals and Camelot codes, so you can stop re-deriving which chords belong mid-session. Build a progression from presets or by hand with inversions and voicings, loop it at tempo, then export it as a MIDI file to drag into your DAW.

How to use it

  1. Pick a key and scale from the selectors.
  2. Tap chords to hear them, or choose a progression preset.
  3. Adjust inversions or voicings and loop the progression at tempo.
  4. Export the finished progression as a MIDI file.

FAQ

Is this free?

Yes — every feature here is free and unlimited.

Can I export MIDI without paying?

Yes — MIDI export is free; there's no Pro gate on this tool.

Is any audio uploaded?

No — everything is generated and played locally in your browser.

Does it show Roman numerals and Camelot codes?

Yes — both are shown for every diatonic chord, alongside inversion and voicing options.

The MIDI file has a Chords track and a root-note Bass track at the tempo shown, 480 ticks per beat. Presets switch the scale to major or minor when they need to; numerals follow the scale's own chord qualities, so a pentatonic "chord" is whatever stacking every other scale tone gives you.
